Pupils from Year 5 and 6 represented the school in the Danone Primary Football Cup at West Exe school on Wednesday 29th November. They were split into two teams, one representing Year 6 and the other comprising pupils from Year 5.
Each team was placed in a separate pool and played five matches over the course of the evening. Year 6 started promisingly with a 0-0 draw followed by a 1-0 win against Pinhoe in which Charlie scored directly from a corner. However the strong level of the pool quickly became evident and they were unfortunate to lose their next two matches despite some excellent defensive efforts from Joel in goal and from Harriet in working tirelessly to close down the opposition to limit their chances. They then showed great character to regroup and were hugely unlucky to only draw their last game against Montgomery where they created some excellent chances through Daniel and Emily.
Year 5 from the outset showed that they could work excellently as a team both in defence and attack, again starting their pool with a win against Pinhoe thanks to a calmly taken goal from Harry and a draw. In their third game they faced Exeter School and in an extremely high quality game they unfortunately lost 1-0 to a late Exeter goal. The team however used this experience to motivate themselves further and responded in the best possible fashion in the next game beating Bowhill 5-0 with Tegan, Otto and Nathan linking together in attack to share the goal scoring duties between themselves. Year 5 then finished the group with another win, 2-0 against Wynstream, in which the entire team combined to score the first goal with the ball starting from Max in the Broadclyst goal, through Jack and Ben in defence until Nathan scored in an empty net with no player having more than two touches in the entire move.
Both teams should be proud of their achievements, with Year 6 participating in an extremely strong pool and showing great character in the chilly conditions and Year 5 in finishing second in their pool in their first entry into the competition.
