music2Music is taught throughout the school by specialist teachers, in every year group, including practical music, musical appreciation, and composition and performance. Children will participate in whole-class brass lessons, have the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of workshops and be taught how to use music software. The aim is to ensure that children's appreciation and ability to analyse the music listened to are developing appropriately. This is in addition to learning songs in class and assemblies, and our comprehensive provision of music lessons for those families who are interested.

ChoirThe school boasts three choirs with a total of over 190 members. The KS1 choir is for 4 – 7 year olds who rehearse on a Monday. The KS2 choir rehearses on a Tuesday afternoon and there is an opportunity for them to audition to be part of a smaller Chamber Choir. The weekly rehearsals develop an extensive repertoire, with a range of styles and harmonies, to be performed in assemblies, concerts and events in and out of school.

The choirs have performed at various school events, including Devon County Show, the main stage in the centre of Exeter, on the London Eye and the switching on of the Christmas Lights in Exeter. We are currently looking to extend these opportunities and enter local and national competitions.

Using the school recording studio we have produced a CD. Although performed predominantly by the three choirs, there are three tracks featuring every child in the school.

All children are welcome to perform in our regular café concerts, termly concerts and at the annual Summer Concert at Killerton House and Gardens.

Music lessonsAt Broadclyst we have an excellent instrumental music lesson service, offering quality tuition through our experienced and specialist music teachers. A wide range of musical instruments can be learnt spanning all instrument groups, and include trumpet, cornet, trombone, clarinet, flute, piano, keyboard, guitar and soon strings (such as violin, viola and cello). Our purpose-fitted music room at Victory Hall provides learners a perfect space to concentrate and learn in peace, with a grand piano, specialist furniture, stands, PA for singers, keyboards and other instruments.

Pupils learning an instrument are given regular opportunities to perform to others and share their learning, through termly concerts in the school café. The children see their progress measured weekly in a detailed log book that the teacher uses to record their effort and improvements as well as reflecting on their home practice diary. This and the annual written report to parents inform families of the progress their children are making throughout their time with their instrumental teacher.

Catering for all ages, abilities and pockets, lessons are available for individuals, or in groups of two or three pupils together. Our instrumental lessons run every term, and on average for 12 lessons per term, with prices as follows:

Individual - £14 per lesson (20 minute lessons)
As a group of two - £8 per lesson (20 minute lessons)
As a group of three - £5 per lesson (20 minute lessons)
