A team of eight Year 5 and 6 pupils represented the school in the Exeter and Mid-Devon Cyclocross competition on Thursday 28th February 2019.
The team were very excited to take part upon their arrival and after a quick briefing around the cyclocross bikes by a British Cycling coach they were ready for their time trial. The time trial comprised of one lap of the circuit which included some tight turns, a steep incline and a speedy descent before moving onto a long straight and a sweeping corner to finish. After waiting patiently for their turn each pupil completed their lap successfully and then were seeded according to their finishing time.
To finish the event each pupil took part in a race of up to 13 pupils which required not only the ability to race quickly but also tactically in order to finish in the best position possible. After the considerable efforts of Charlotte and Jessie in the first two races the team learnt about the best way to complete their 3 laps of the circuit (later reduced to 2) and this resulted in Kasper finishing second in his race before Reuben, Heidi, Ben and Jack all won their races, in the case of Jack overtaking their opponent on the line.
The whole squad were delighted with their performance and now just had to wait for the results, however there was an unprecedented result; the top three teams all finished equal so the results had to go down to the best time trial times. After an overnight delay the results were in, and Broadclyst finished in a highly credible second place and the team are now looking forward to receiving their silver medals.
