Over February half term, the winners of the Global Enterprise Challenge 2017-18 were flown to Seattle to visit Microsoft and attend their prize-giving. For the first year ever, a company from Broadclyst won the competition. ‘Trendy T’s’ (a tie-dye t-shirt company) were crowned the winners in July last year and had been waiting excitedly since then to go on the trip of a life time to Seattle.
After a short 10 hour fight to Seattle, the team embarked on a cultural and culinary tour of the city. The first day saw a trip to the Museum of Popular Culture, where the team visited the Marvel exhibit and saw memorabilia from many famous films. Then, a trip to the Chihuly Glass Museum, a gallery exhibiting the work of world-renowned glass sculptor Dale Chihuly. An evening at the iMax cinema watching a movie and eating popcorn was then on the cards. Day 2 was centred around visiting the world famous Pike Place Market with its famous fish throwers. The best mac ‘n cheese in the world was on the menu for lunch, which kept us going for a trip the aquarium and a boat cruise around the lake. Perhaps the highlight of our sightseeing was going to top of Seattle’s most famous landmark – The Space Needle. This view was taken in both by day and night from the viewing gallery and also the glass-floored platform.
On the third day, the company finally visited Microsoft where they gave a short presentation with details of the journey of their company. They were then awarded their trophies and certificates by Anthony Salcito of Microsoft. It was a pleasure to meet the winning team in the Secondary aged category – Smoothie Crown who were also awarded with their prizes. After a final celebratory meal and a trip to the mall to buy souvenirs, it was time for the flight home. Congratulations again to Trendy Ts, the winners of the GEC 2017-18.
