On the 25th June Year 5 went for their third annual trip to the Big Bang Science Fair. This is a STEM-based day out where the children can meet and engage with people from local and national STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) industries and companies. 2019 saw the Fair grow considerably as it was hosted in its new venue, Westpoint arena.
The children really enjoyed getting to grips with the exhibits, including an exciting 4x4 vehicle from the Army, a Devon Air Ambulance helicopter and one of our school favourites – the Space Odyssey Space Dome! Virtual Reality goggles were, as always, a crowd-pleaser and a new aspect of the day was the competition. Throughout the day, the children were encouraged to speak to STEM ambassadors around the arena who would explain what they did in their jobs, and award the children a sticker for meeting them – these then entered a draw to win a prize!
The day was an excellent opportunity for the Year 5s to become more inspired by STEM careers and subjects, and we look forward to going once again next June.
