Girls from Year 4 and 5 represented Broadclyst in the Under 10’s futsal competition as part of the Exeter and Mid-Devon school games at St Luke’s school on Tuesday 23rd January.
Upon arriving the girls were excited to learn that they were to play 8 fixtures over the course of the event against all the other schools in attendance. Each fixture was only to last six minutes, however there was only a two minute break between fixtures and to increase the intensity still further there was only one break allocated for the team over the 8 fixtures!
After starting their fixtures with a 0-0 draw against Wynstream, which included an excellent performance from Jessie, they then won their next 3 fixtures in a row including a highly impressive 4-0 victory against Wilcombe. This included a hat trick from Tegan to take her total for the competition to 4 goals. The team then drew two of their remaining fixtures 0-0, with impressive performance from Lucy and Bronwyn in defence and Emily in goal. After losing to a very strong Wynstream team, the team ensured that they finished on a high note beating Montgomery in their final game thanks to Isabelle scoring her third goal of the competition with the last kick of the game.
The team were soon to find out how valuable that last minute winning goal would turn out to be, discovering that they had finished in an excellent 3rd place; not only winning bronze medals but also the opportunity to go through to the county finals later on in the term. Every one of the six players involved were hugely proud of this superb achievement and were proudly displaying their medals, accompanied by loud cheers of ‘bronze medallists!’
